Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills training is important for anyone who deals with coworkers, managers, vendors, or customers throughout the course of a business day. Good interpersonal skills involve much more than simply being nice to people. They require you to actively listen to others, use your body language effectively, think carefully before replying to a question or statement, and apply your skills to resolve conflicts and negotiate for what you want. Listening skills

Body language
Have you ever been talking to someone and their mouths said one thing, but their body language said another? Your body language says what you are not saying when you speak. If you ask someone how they are, and they say "fine," but they have their arms crossed and they look like they are about to cry, would you believe them? Body language has the power to convey a lot of emotions including anger, happiness, sadness, depression, fear, and aggressiveness. Modify your own body language if you notice any issues with how people are perceiving you. Stop fidgeting when you speak. Don't tug your ears or rub your nose constantly. It's distracting, and some people may think you are not telling the truth if you are moving around excessively.

Conflict resolution
Interpersonal skills training can include modules on conflict resolution, especially in extensive training programs. Successful conflict resolution relies on you being able to use your interpersonal communication skills to diffuse tense situations and help all parties involved come to an agreement. Again, good listening skills will be very important, as will reflecting on what each person is saying and confirming your understanding before taking action. Having good interpersonal communication skills can help you resolve small conflicts or even large arguments between multiple parties.

Negotiation
Negotiating what you want out of a situation involves having good personal interpersonal communication skills. You need to know exactly how to communicate with others in a way that does not offend them or make them think twice about helping you. Using scare tactics or threats is a sure way to lose a negotiation and end up unhappy with the outcome. Using your good interpersonal communication skills can help you to actively listen to your conversation partner and negotiate a positive result for all parties.
